Had there been no mention of that magic surname, would you have known whose photos these are? The usually glamhyped hyperrealist photographer David LaChapelle just published these 4th of July extravaganza called The Americans in Vogue Homme. But while these don’t have the same gloss we expect, there’s the same level of provocation and the same question: what is real? In what appears to be a “normal” American family tradition, grandma is armed with a gun, Spot is guzzling the booze, aunts are enjoying their man-ho, the pastor’s wife is hurling her buffet plate, and Mrs. Smith down the road is displaying her flexibility. Yes, I just came up with those details. But come to think of it, there’s just so much more in there. Look. (via lamjc)

This is what the STATUS ref would look like if one of our graphic designers do the grocery. Plus more cheese, maybe. And this would be shot in lomo. But this happens to be a Texan midwife’s. Ever wondered what the ref of a photographer-carpenter would look like? Or maybe a bartender’s, a construction worker’s, a cook’s, or a documentary filmmaker’s? That’s art for photographer Mark Menjivar who have photographed refs across the “Untied States” for the last three years. The result: this series called You Are What You Eat. Now, how bout a peek into your refs? (via contexts.org)

From initial sightings of Dark Night of the Soul posters at SXSW last March to mailed ones without return addresses, the guys behind this shady collab finally came out–that’s Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse who took care of the music part and David Lynch who’s releasing an accompanying photobook. Due to some problems, though, it looks like the records can’t be released anymore. But you can listen to all of them in their entirety at the NPR site. Now, take a deep breath before we mention some of the artists: Flaming Lips, Julian Casablancas of The Strokes, Frank Black of The Pixies, Iggy Pop, James Mercer of The Shins, Nina Persson of The Cardigans, and Suzanne Vega. Now you see it, now you don’t. Visionaire magazine’s latest issue entitled Solaire is breaking new ground in the magazine world. It’s been produced entirely from light-sensitive paper. Indoors, the images appear to be black and white, but upon contact with direct sunlight, the pages transform into color.
Contributing photographers include including Yoko Ono, Richard Phillips and John Baldesarri. The magazine only produced a limited batch of 3,000 that costs $250 each. Check out more before and after images after the jump.

They call it the Icarian view after that mythic dude who fell to the sea when his wings melted. But that’s not the case anymore with aerial photographer Jason Hawkes who can easily soar high and low to capture The Big Picture aboard his helicopter. You don’t even need to guess where the metal bird hovered for these landscape shots. He tagged them via Google maps–whether those vacant Vegas courts, this beach in Menorca, those Hong Kong apartments, this rollercoaster in Maryland, or that row of Nevada school buses–and you don’t have to conquer your fear of heights. You can just scroll down and say wow. (via Boston.com)

Rewind to 1975, William English needed a portfolio as part of his application to National Film School and the Royal College. He ended up in Sex and shot this fiery little pixied model before a severed leg and later wearing a transparent rubber suit.
I was dismayed that they took no interest whatsoever in the pictures. I mean they just blanked them, wouldn’t even discuss them. In retrospect they may have thought I was aiming to get involved in making porn films!
Later after Vivienne Westwood mannequined for the shoot, the punk movement was born. These photos are displayed at the Maggs Gallery until May 20. [via The Look]
