She’s beauty, she’s grace, she’s gonna preach Baduizm in our face! Last Saturday night, October 14 2017, Queen Mother Erykah Badu came to the shores of Philippines as she washed the bad vibes of Friday the 13th. She did not just deliver. She got us living. She has blessed her tropical children with her Neo-Soul, Nubian Goddess realness. She made people recognize that the Queen Mother has arrived! —by Rogin Warhol, photographed by Almond Mendoza
The night may have started with a bad traffic resulted to heavy rains that had been happening over the week. But as people arrived to the temporary Mecca of Queen Erykah that was Harbour Garden Tent in Sofitel Manila, they were greeted the hype and the chillest vibes that only her fans could bring to the air. Turntables & Rhythm set the mood for the night.
The second leg was followed by spittin bars, sultry truths, and kicking it up a notch. RH Xanders kept us woke for the evening, followed by the soulful Kat Agarrado of SinoSiKat?, August Wahh of Chocolate Grass joined our local soul diva, then the heavy hitter Skarm himself came busting out with some bars. The four eventually busted a freestyle that got them asking: “Are you ready for?” And us chanting—Badu Badu Badu! They set the bar just a little higher and got us pumped to be blessed by the Analog Girl in the Digital World.
As her children observed her crew and band set up on stage, they await her majesty’s arrival on stage. What we expected was beyond our wildest dreams. In her full regalia, the Queen Mother was already letting us know that she came here to do some slayage (sorry Queen B). Necklaces and crystals were adoring her. She looked organic while being high fashioned. And to top it all of, her signature straw high hat acted as her crowning glory.
From the biggest details like her enigmatic signature sound to her stage production, Queen Erykah set the bar so high. With a set list that has her sickest and greatest hits: Hello, Appletree, Danger, Soldier, and of course, Tyrone. Her children were grinding and feeling the music in a spiritual level. We were reaching peak Baduizm together and Queen Mother is taking us to church!
What made it monumental and even more powerful was when she spilled some truth. “We know what you guys are going through.” she opened up the issue of our political climate, leaving us shouting as affirmation. “We scared to come here. Y’all scared to come to America.” And if isn’t that the truth? But the most memorable one was when she came into the pit to commune with her children. Our editorial assistant even got to give her a small anito — a gift from this native country to her. She raised it on her head and waved it around, making that memory a bit of a parallel to A Circle of Life.
TFW SHE GOT MY FUCKING TOTEM !!!! #ERYKAHVSEVERYTHANG #ERYKAHINMNL

It was a night of ethereal Neo-Soul vibrations, grinding and vibing, and just a grand old time with the biggest icons of Neo-Soul. As we served as the last leg of her Everythang tour, she did not only gave us her everythang, she let us know that she is everythang.
