Promising her cosmic playfulness to never end with a period, iconic Japanese artist YAYOI KUSAMA unreservedly falls into a kaleidoscopic abyss as she continues to connect the dots to infinity.
Beaming up at the cosmos at what feels like a stationary point in time, celebrated Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama transforms the intense repetition that marked her earlier works into an immersive and dizzying experience that has us spiraling out of control and into a plane where only Kusama could fly to. From the year dot, Kusama has been drawing people from different wakes and cultures, and finally she peppers the monochromatic suburbs of Shinjuku, Tokyo with a museum that is unmistakably her technicolored dreamscape, allowing us a physical chance to venture deep into Kusama’s psychedelic world of abstract expressionism. “It was my long-cherished dream to build a museum to let the people around the world come and see my art. I am thus deeply impressed that my dream came true,” Kusama shares of the newly constructed extension of her ingenuity. Hand-picked by Kusama herself, the five-story building features Creation is a Solitary Pursuit, Love is What Brings You Closer to Art, a collection of “My Eternal Soul” series as well as her famous infinity room, a weightless experience that expands beyond the canvas and reflects her exploration on the vast space between her perpetual pain and love for art.
“Day by day, I solely continue to make works at the risk on my own life. If you feel the love I dedicated into my works for humanity, I will be nothing more than happy.”
Teetering between the dotted line of vulnerability and age-old strength, the legendary artist continues to blot out the background noise of her past and channel it into an explosive color that paints over the grey areas of her childhood. Guided by her unique vision and unparalleled creativity, Kusama remains to create with galactic delight. “I heard people around the world are visiting to look at my art. I shall be delighted if I can give them joy and emotion,” she confesses. While it’s true that all that glistens is not gold, Kusama highlights her fadeless pursuit in art as she sees the world as a speck amongst something greater, driven by an obsessive concentration to create with a force that knows no age. “I am working on my artistic creation from the morning till the night with desperation. I wish to face sincerely with my art while there’s breath in me.” Travelling across the cosmos and back into full circle in her lonely pursuit, Yayoi Kusama proves that she’s not just another dot in the universe. “Day by day, I solely continue to make works at the risk on my own life. If you feel the love I dedicated into my works for humanity, I will be nothing more than happy.”
