For the first time in six years, Gorillaz has released a new song–and just a day before Donald Trump’s inauguration too. “Hallelujah Money” features Benjamin Clementine as he delivers a soulful tune over lyrics defined by politics.
Throughout the video, Clementine is engulfed by a series of projected cartoons, movie clips (with some disturbing content), and dancers. You’ll also spot 2-D appear throughout the video in puppet form. Within halfway of the video, Clementine begins a speech with Damon Albarn’s vocals begin to fizzle out. While the song returns to its soulful tone, it’s clearly a trick. Amusingly enough, the video ends with Spongebob Squarepants screaming after Clementine ends the song in a jump scare fashion.
Later this year, Gorillaz is expected to release their latest album. However “Hallelujah Money” isn’t considered a new single or part of the album.–ERNEST TO GOODNESS
