Blumhouse Productions, the production house behind box-office horror flicks like Get Out, Insidious, and Split, is coming out with a new slasher film to keep you up at night, and maybe several days. The trailer for Happy Death Day, directed by Christopher Landon and co-written alongside Scott Lobdell, finds seemingly indifferent sorority girl Tree, reliving the day of her murder, ad infinitum. To add salt to the wound, it’s actually Tree’s birthday. Tree now has to figure out who her killer is and why the ominous person behind the creepy baby mask wants her dead, before her real life nightmare drives her to the edge.
The Groundhog Day-meets-Scream story stars Jessica Rothe (Lily + Kat La La Land) as our unfortunate protagonist, alongside Israel Broussard (Flipped, The Bling Ring), Ruby Modine, Rachel Matthews, and Charles Aitken. The film comes out on the Friday the 13th of October. Although its two and a half minute trailer may seem like a dead giveaway of the plot, if the success of past Blumhouse horror films is any indication, then we’ll hopefully still be in for a thrilling, spine-chilling time.–PB&JAM
