Make The Cut: Simon Ariel Vasquez S/S 2013

Dainty laser cuts may have the tendency to look like grandma’s doilies, but Simon Ariel Vasquez keeps it fresh by incorporating it into sleek and architectural satin dresses and sharp suits. The otherwise minimalist collection played on Simon’s strength and precision in shape, cut, and structure as strategically placed details kept box dresses and straight-cut frocks from hiding a woman’s natural shape. The menswear looks also helped accentuate a the male figure’s better qualities as broad shoulders narrowed down to slim cut torsos, giving the illusion (or perhaps enhancing the reality) of a swimmer’s bod underneath the clean cut exterior.

Simon’s restraint on color also helped propel the collection’s elegance, making it perfect for a romantic evening out or an intimate dinner party with friends. The grayscale palette is livened up by the hints of electric blue and puce, while large scale pearl necklaces, earrings, and bracelets keep the collection straddling the fine line between understated and statement-making.—DEXYLEBOWSKI
