Far East Movement members Kev Nish, J-Splif, Prohgress, and DJ Virman give us the dish on the evolving hip hop scene and being Asian rappers.
What’s the movement behind Far East Movement?
J-Splif: The “movement” is the lifestyle we represent…from street wear, to the hollywood dj/club scene, to the lowest of the lowriders, and even to the dance crews. Our music has always touched on different parts of all these elements and we’re finally bringing it all together.
Brian Tee from Fast and the Furious described your music as entertaining in a social way. What social message/s do you usually try to express through your songs?
Kev Nish: Our background has always been socially charged so to express our views, we do it with our actions. For instance, we used to rap that one day there needs to be Asian faces in mainstream radio and a portrayal of Asians in western media that aren’t fuelled by stereotypes.
