This situation in the STATUS HQ is becoming more of a routine now. Every week, there is always a person who’s sick (damn this weather. What did we do to deserve this?) But I guess if there’s one routine we’re not sick of, it’s definitely our Music Mondays. Check out the new videos from Bow Wow, CyHi da Prynce, Arctic Monkeys, The Roots, and Bruno Mars. Music as medicine, why not?
The flow and style sound like a cross between a Wiz Khalifa/J. Cole/Drake song, huh? But nope, this is from a rapper who’s been in the game longer than those guys. Bow Wow proves to us that he’s still pretty much on his grizzle with his music video for “Mary Jane” from Cash Money Records and off his I’m Better Than You mixtape. And woah, Wizzle with weed? This video is like watching him grow up right before our eyes. Maybe it’s finally gonna get interesting for him.
Kanye buddy and Def Jam rapper CyHi Da Prynce comes out with “Cold As Ice,” which I think is one of his stronger songs off Royal Flush 2. And like the song title, it’s cooled down with a semi-slow tempo and a sharp, tight flow. Glad it finally got a visual.
Arctic Monkey‘s video for “Evil Twin” works as a sequel to “Suck It And See” (seems reasonable ‘coz “Evil Twin” is the band’s B-side to the single). Also directed by Focus Creeps, “Evil Twin” is still very gritty, get-down-and-dirty with drummer Matt Helders and his girl on motorcycles, biking around trailer parks, playing with weapons and basically doing wild stuff. Very badass. Just like the song with its jabbing guitars.
The video for Bruno Mars‘ “It Will Rain” is as dramatic and mushy as the lyrics (‘Coz there’ll be no sunlight, if I lose you baby) and the movie (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1) it’s featured. “The Twilight movies for me [are] a love story. But it’s a dark love story. And I think the best way to describe the song is: it’s the darker side of love. I think that pretty much sums it up,” Mars tells Billboard. Okay. More interesting is, between 3:00-3:05, I actually thought Cullen was Mars. Hmm. Maybe it’s the hair.
It’s been in the news that legendary hip-hop collective The Roots are releasing a video every Tuesday until December 6 (the release date of their 13th album, undun). Last week, they gave us “Tip the Scale” featuring Dice Raw and directed by Clifton Bell and it builds up just like their album. Featuring a cliffhanger at the end, the black and white slow motion video just leaves you wanting more. About the song, it sounds like a The Roots classic—and that’s not a bad thing at all.—HITGIRL
