Featuring three young labels, The CUBAO X art wear center I LOVE YOU STORE launched THE OTHER SIDE last Friday. Designers GEOF GONZALES, MIKE LAVAREZ, and the SOME OF duo now display their creations in the store’s former workshop area. The quirky shop bustled with fashionistas and pulsating mixes as drinks on the house were passed to everyone that night. Store partners Sharon and Mimi (in black and printed mint below) couldn’t say it any better as they make their shop even bigger: All you need is love, love, love.

Before He Was Arrested

Shepard Fairey

Of course you’ve seen his work, but do you know the man? That’s the guy who made the famous Obama poster, now a classic political campaign material even emulated by French President Sarkozy. He was recently arrested for supposed defacement of property, but before that, STATUS had a chat with Shepard Fairey on how he really wants to reach out to people.

I don’t always think that because you’re a street artist, that you have to just make work for the street. I would classify myself more as a populist so the mediums that I use reflect a desire to be accessible rather than necessarily saying, “I’m a street artist and I only do stuff that is illegal because I’m about being a renegade.”

Check out the 5th issue of STATUS Magazine and see how hardcore the guy is. There’s certainly reason why he’s got the police’s attention. Available at THESE distribution points around the metro. Above photo from LA Times.

DALAGA, NYC

Dalaga NYC

Along the unassuming Franklin Street in Brooklyn, you will find a quaint boutique called DALAGA. Dalaga is a Filipino word which translates to “young lady”.  Once you enter the store, you feel like you are entering a young lady’s apartment. The clothes are showcased on mismatched furniture while the cashier is behind a big antique dresser. The chandeliers give the store a warm glow while the drapes hanging from the ceiling and hardwood floor make the space more cozy. The little trinkets throughout the store add to its personality. The shop carries a nicely edited selection of women’s blouses, dresses, jeans, shoes, accessories and sprinkles a few men’s items. DALAGA is an authentic boutique combining great brands and unique styles, unlike the polished generic stores in the city.

Status Magazine hosted yet another Yard Sale! Last Feb 15 at Embassy Fly from 11am till 7pm. Hipsters, sneaker heads, dancers, artists, the  all over cool
kid – and their parents! – came over to Embassy to check out the sale.It was cool seeing some new faces amidst the regular yard sale attendees.

The next best thing about this yard sale was the fact that we released the revolutionized rebellion of a magazine, Status issue 5! These babies were selling like hotcakes. Everyone wanted a piece of the rebellion action and that dose of the awesome-ness in their hands.

Status welcomed all vendors- old and new- to sell their goodies to the fashion hungry crowd, while the Revolution caught some rebels on the lose and took mug shots at his photo booth. Guitar Hero booth brought out the inner rockstar of everyone, and a dope set by DJ Ace later brought out the soul.

The Status Yardsale series of 2009 is officially in full effect. We will keep you posted for the next date.  So Stay close and stay in the know- only with Status Magazine.

Pase Rock: Not Just Good Enough

Pase Rock Brandon ShowersThe DJ who made “Sexy Motherfucker”, “Lindsay Lohan’s Revenge”, and “Bullshit as Usual” talks seriously with STATUS:

“If you know your American History then you know that once a slave crossed that line, the Ohio River, you were free. So imagine all these runaway slaves that crossed that river into Cincinnati and just stayed there. They didn’t go any further, they just stayed right across the river. And I think that says a lot about me and my experience. A struggle against complacency, a struggle against being “good enough” and maybe a lot of fear that I’m this close to having to go back to my former life, whatever that is.”

The recently Grammy-nominated neo-funk artist Janelle Monae welcomes STATUS into her robo-soul-electric world and shares the trouble that her wild imagination had caused her. Take a peek at this interview outtake, and go see her “Many Moons” Music Video Short Film below.

Janelle Monae Status Magazine

“Well, I think in my imagining things…they would sometimes come true. And yeah, it did get me into trouble, lots of times. I love fire and I remember playing with fire a lot growing up and I remember an incident where I actually burned up a wall or something in my house. [snickers] It was crazy but I’ve always been a risk-taker and sometimes, it works and it doesn’t but that’s all part of life—being unafraid to fail. And so, as long as I’m here, I’m gonna fail and not be afraid of it and after that, you’ll get a chance to really get into your prime.”
