Thanksgiving week may be over, but that doesn’t mean we’ll run out of things to be thankful for. Here’s a lil list to ponder while you’re still stuffing your face with leftovers. First up, guess who’s home for the holidays? Chad Hugo of our cover boys N*E*R*D partied at KYSS with the folks behind Ronac Art Center’s Secret Service and Terminal Manila as the shops celebrate their anniversary.
You didn’t hear about it? Chad kept it hush-hush as he was up for some serious R&R. Well, Martin Cruz got the night covered. Click the link for more of Chad and also MC Roscoe Umali drinkin the night away with Manila’s streetwear gang.
Like La Blogotheque? Fancy a Black Cab Session? Exciting, sure, but a hundred other similar online channels have also launched since. Here’s a little tweak–turn the camera not only to the musician but also to an excellent cover artist. That’s uncovered, “where local musicians come together to jam with talented cover artists.” Featured in their premiere is brilliant guitarman Johnoy Danao with a ukelele guy, Mackie Torres. You should totally suggest the next artists you want.
Number Line Records stays as a gift that keeps on giving as they release Modulogeek’s Transition, like always, for free. You’d remember the guy, a.k.a. Joon Guillien, from our August issue featuring his music and his love for video games since the Atari 2600. This may be music for robots, but it’s for humans, too. Take a deep breath for “Spectre” and “The Beginning of a Beautiful Friendship.” While you’re at it, marvel at the EP’s accompanying art book featuring Charlie Visnic’s spiraling harmonograph project, also seen on the compilation’s cover.
It’s finally December again. Time constantly beat us, and that means it’s the time for the agony of having Metro Manila Film Festival invade our theaters and for having nicer films bumped off to January. Well, this makes it easier. Tikoy Aguiluz’s Manila Kingpin pays tribute to our homegrown action genre and resuscitates it via torture scenes, horse carriage chases, gang wars, all in gorgeous black and white.
Mogwai Cinematheque may be over in Cubao X, but Cinema is Incomplete, a new alternative screening venue in Anonas Extension, QC is soft opening. Here’s what they have to offer: “films that bleed out of the screen; underseen films; films from regions outside Metro Manila; films from Southeast Asia; films that challenge social, political, cultural, aesthetic and cinematic status quos; films that persuade, dissuade, disturb, hurt, shame, empower or excite one to thud and talk after watching.” And the best part is: it’s free. All you have to pay is beer. Did you just say I can drink beer the legit way in the cinema. Where to get tickets?
